The best time of year for tree work in Scotland
When to prune, reduce or remove trees in Scotland, how bird nesting season affects tree work, and when urgent work cannot wait.
Most tree work in Scotland can be done at any time of year, but some seasons are better than others — for the tree, for wildlife and for the law.
Late autumn to late winter
With leaves off, it is easier to see the structure of deciduous trees and plan cuts. Many trees are dormant, which reduces stress, and there are no nesting birds to worry about. This is the most popular window for pruning and crown reductions.
Bird nesting season
All wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law in Scotland. The main nesting season runs roughly from March to August. Work can still go ahead, but trees and hedges must be checked for active nests first, and work stopped or delayed if one is found.
Trees to prune at specific times
Birch, maple and walnut bleed sap heavily if pruned in late winter and early spring, so they are better cut in mid-summer or autumn. Cherries and plums are best pruned in summer to reduce the risk of disease.
When it cannot wait
Storm damage, split limbs, and trees that are leaning or unstable should be made safe straight away regardless of the season.
