What's included

Everything covered in a typical new lawns & turfing job

  • Removal of old turf and debris

Stripping out failed grass, moss and surface roots so the new turf is not laid over the problems that killed the last lawn.

  • Ground preparation and levelling

Cultivating, grading and firming the soil to remove hollows and bumps, so the finished lawn mows evenly.

  • Drainage improvement

Breaking up compaction and improving the top layer where ground sits wet, which is common on heavy Scottish soils.

  • Quality turf laying

Fresh turf laid in staggered courses with tight joints and neatly cut edges around beds, paths and curves.

  • Aftercare guidance

Clear watering and first-cut advice so the lawn roots in well during its critical first few weeks.

We clear all arisings and debris, leave the area swept and tidy, and give practical advice on looking after the results.

Why choose us for new lawns & turfing

The difference between a lawn that looks good for a season and one that looks good for a decade is nearly all in the preparation. We take the time to get levels, soil condition and drainage right before a single roll is laid, and we are fully insured and careful with access routes through your property while the turf is moved in.

New Lawns & Turfing in Fife, Dundee, Angus and Perthshire

Turf grown for the Scottish climate handles our cooler summers, high rainfall and short winter days far better than generic fine-lawn mixes, so we use hard-wearing rye-based turf for most family gardens here. Heavy clay in parts of Angus and Perthshire needs extra attention to drainage and compaction, while free-draining coastal ground in Fife and around Dundee can dry out quickly, making early watering especially important.

What it costs

Turfing & New Lawns prices in Fife, Dundee, Angus and Perthshire

New turf is priced by the area covered, plus the preparation needed to give it a fair chance. Most of the work is in what happens before the turf arrives: clearing the old lawn, rotovating, levelling and improving the soil. A garden in Perth with decent topsoil is quicker than a compacted new-build plot in Cupar where the soil needs real attention. We quote for the whole job, turf included, after seeing the ground.

What affects the price

  • Square metres of turf required
  • Condition of the existing ground and how much clearance is needed
  • Levelling, rotovating and topsoil or sand needed to get a true surface
  • Access for barrowing turf and removing old material
  • Any edging, paths or borders being formed at the same time

Common questions

New Lawns & Turfing FAQs

When is the best time to lay turf in Scotland?

Autumn and spring are ideal because the ground is warm and rainfall is reliable, but turf can be laid at almost any time of year provided it is watered properly after laying.

How soon can I walk on a new lawn?

Keep off it for the first two to three weeks where possible so the roots can knit into the soil. Light use is usually fine after that.

How much watering does new turf need?

Generously and daily in dry spells for the first few weeks, right through the turf into the soil beneath. This is the single most common reason new lawns fail.

Can you turf over an existing lawn?

We do not recommend it. Laying over old grass traps thatch and unevenness beneath the new turf, so we strip and prepare the ground first.

Do you remove the old turf and waste?

Yes, all stripped turf and garden waste is taken away as part of the job.

What type of turf suits a Scottish garden?

We use a hard-wearing ryegrass-based turf that copes with cooler temperatures, shorter growing seasons and family use. It stands up well to the rain and wind we get across Fife, Angus and Perthshire, and stays green through most of the year.

How long before I can walk on a new lawn?

Keep off it for the first two to three weeks so the roots can knit into the soil beneath. After that, light use is fine. Give it a month or so before children and pets are using it properly, and keep the first few cuts high.

Why does my new-build lawn keep waterlogging?

Many new-build gardens across Fife and Tayside have compacted subsoil with only a thin layer of topsoil over it, so water has nowhere to go. Laying fresh turf on top of that will not fix it. We break up the compaction, improve the soil and get the levels right before any turf goes down.

What customers say

Reviews from our Facebook page

“Lee and team did a garden clearance for me after moving into a property with a pretty neglected garden, including a pretty hefty ivy growth on the back of the house. They did an absolutely cracking job of clearing all the growth, the ivy, some unexpected branch piles and taking away all the rubbish. Did in a day what would have taken me many days to do myself. Also got some great advice on the next steps of bringing the garden back to life.”

“Had Lee and team lay a patio and path. Work was done in a good manner and to a high standard, everything was left clean and tidy and nothing was too much hassle. Thanks Mr McDonald.”
